When there are literally hundreds of Business Schools in India, is there a need for another one? The question seems intriguing. But I believe is not a very relevant one. Clearly, given the overall Human Capital needs of our country, we need an increase in supply of talent on an exponential basis. In every single sector in our country…..be it Services or Manufacturing or the Not-for-profit sector or the Agri-business sector; …….all we hear of is about the acute shortage of talented qualified persons. From young people, on the other hand, we are faced with the complaint that they are confused. They do not know where to study not just in order to get employment in the short term, but in order to train and prepare themselves for a long-term career that is rewarding and fulfilling on more dimensions than one.
The objective of FOSTIIMA is to provide in a substantive way a world class Business School ambience in the voluntary sector based on a not-for-profit model where young people can leverage the best traditions of the strong Brand India image and the solid intellectual capital that exists within India (but which faces several self-imposed constraints) in order to help them get access to a robust management education which is particularly strong not just on the theoretical side, but which leverages the actual real-life experiences of successful managers from various sectors within the country.
FOSTIIMA is the brainchild of IIM alumni partly motivated by their desire to give back to Indian society at large (from which we have derived so many benefits) as well as to create for a wider body of students the opportunity to partake of at least some parts of the IIM experience. We have on our lists committed IIM graduates who are both full-time and part-time faculty members. We have strong interest from IIM graduates who are now senior managers in various organizations to take active interest in placement. Lastly and most importantly, many of them are very keen to ensure that FOSTIIMA graduates get access to the intellectual and professional networks which have a distinct IIM flavour to it.
We have started starting small by design in order to ensure that our Quality standards are not compromised. It is not going to be easy to join FOSTIIMA. But it is definitely going to be a unique and worthwhile experience. But over time, we have ambitious plans to scale up on a nationwide basis as we are convinced that a large, vigorous, growing network will be a win-win for all who become part of the FOSTIIMA family be they students, faculty, trustees or recruiters. We are off to a sanguine and optimistic start. The journey promises to be exciting and fruitful. |
